6 Ways to Balance Time

As a dharma business owner, you may find that your relationship to what gets attention and what doesn’t affects your own sense of balance.

I used to struggle with prioritizing, getting my needs met, accomplishing projects, and finding the time to take care of my most prized experiences:

  • Self-care
  • Creative play

Most of the time, I let those things go as ‘less-than-important’ and I stuffed the feelings I had about that choice (unconsciously).

Eventually, those choices added up and I would find myself struggling energetically in my body, mind, heart, and soul — which left me feeling exhausted and depressed.

Why couldn’t I do what I wanted?

What was I missing?

Trying & Trying Some More

Personally, I tried to run a business while just out of college and failed miserably for many reasons. I wanted to blame others, or a system (like the economy), or some other circumstance outside of myself.

Then I noticed that there were some people who were quite active and engaged, yet were able to also be good to themselves and enjoy a good life/work balance.

I found this fascinating — that’s what I wanted for myself!

For many years now, I’ve been observing people in balance and trying to emulate them as much as I could. I would keep what I liked, what worked for me, and discard the rest.

I read a bunch of books, took workshops, and even found that certain people seemed to be showing up in my life either as models or as warnings.

I paid attention to a few things about these people:

  • Their level of authentic satisfaction with life.
  • What self-supportive actions they chose to take (and not to take).
  • The way they spoke (or didn’t speak) about the above.

As a result of my own challenges with getting to my self-care and play, as well as my desire to understand how others handle this challenge, I can happily say that I’m quite satisfied with my efforts to integrate balance these days.

Is there room for improvement? Sure.

However, I’ve come a long way : )

I’ve also realized this is not something I or many people were born with — however, relating to time in a healthy way IS a set of qualities and skills that can be learned and developed.

So…

What do I think are the most important choices, actions, and perspectives on managing one’s relationship to time?
